Cathedral of Saint Mary The Margin, started as an unpretentious wooden building along Bluff Road top of the hill, was the first brick church erected in the native States of Penisula Malaya. This early English Gothic-style cathedral, shaped like cruciform, was designed by AC Norman. It consists of the nave, which has an open timbered roof, the chancel, raised above the nave floor level, paved with tessellated tiles and lit by three stained-glass windows. On Saturday, 9 February 1895, the Anglican Church of St. Mary the Virgin was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. George Frederick Hose, Bishop of Singapore and Sarawak in the presence of a large and representative congregation. The church was a centre of worship of the small group of Anglicans in and around Kuala Lumpur at that time. Of interest here is a virtually priceless pipe organ built in 1895 by Henry Willis, regarded as the greatest British organ builder in the nineteenth century.
