What are the reasons to visit?

A church ruin on top of a hill with beautiful hill scenery and some ancient funerary stone slabs.

St. Paul's Church

St. Paul's Church was built by Duarte Coelho, a Portuguese Captain on top of St. Paul's Hill. It was built in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life in the South China Sea and was therefore named as "The Lady of the Hill".

During the invasion of the Dutch in 1600s, the church was renamed to St. Paul's Church and it was being turned into a burial ground for their noble dead. St. Francis Xavier was buried here in 1553 before his body was moved to Goa in India.

There are some ancient funerary slabs which are mostly written in Dutch inside the church .
