Penang > Fort CornwallisJalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah Tel: +604-2610260 / 261 What are the reasons to visit? The most interesting landmarks in Gerge Town. One of the cannon, Seri Rambai, is believed to have magical power that can improve fertility.
Fort Corwallis, overlook the harbour in the North Channel, stands at the very tip of the cape of George Town. Fort Cornwallis is built as a defence against the French, Kedah, and pirates by Captain Sir Francis Light after taking possession of the island on 11 August 1786. Even though the fort was originally built for the Royal artillery troops and the military, the fort had never been engaged in any battle in its entire history. There is a Dutch cannon, called the Seri Rambai, which was presented to the Sultan of Johor in 1606. The cannon was then taken possession by the Portuguese and ended up in Jawana in 1613. The cannon was kept until 1795 before it was brought back to Kuala Selangor and eventually placed at Fort Cornwallis in 1871. According to the local folks, women who placed flowers on the barrel could help to enhance their fertility. Today, you can still find gunpowder magazine, a Christian chapel, cell rooms, flagstaff, harbour light and several cannons at Fort Cornwallis. The fort was restored and part of the moat was reinstated so that we can experience the Fort Cornwallis as it was in the old days.
