Kuching > Fort Margherita

Fort Margherita

Fort Magherita was built in 1879, in the defensive edifice/castle style of the late English renaissance, at a location that can overlook the long stretch of Sarawak River. It was named after Charles Brooke's wife, Ranee Margaret.

Today it is a Police Museum that houses old cannons, cannon balls, guns, pistols, swords and other weapons. Prisoner's cell, opium dens and the scenes of hanging can also be seen here.

Take a great scenic view of Kuching city and the Sarawak River on top of the hill.

GETTING THERE: It is located across the Sarawak River. Take a sampan from the Waterfront river bank at 20 sen per trip to cross the river. Report in front of the small police station before you are allowed to the Fort Margherita.
